Fighting against
desertification by promoting biomass charcoal.
Two billion people
in the world face problems in obtaining domestic energy. At the same time, using
only wood increases deforestation with all its consequences: desertification and
draught particularly in the Sahel.
An efficient and
profit-making fuel can be made locally of carbonized savannah weeds or unused
agricultural residues. This provides an alternative domestic fuel, which is less
expensive than charcoal.
Two successful
demonstrations took place in Senegal in 1997 and 1999. The Ministry of Energy,
Mines and Industry declared the biomass charcoal project as a "national energy
project".
